Design Lessons

When one thinks of classic Scandinavian design, Dansk is usually high on the list, but did you know that this staple of wedding registries is actually an American company? After being inspired by a trip to Denmark Martha and Ted Nierenberg returned to their Great Neck, New York home and started Dansk out of their garage in 1954. Working closely with Danish designer Jens Quistgaard the companies first product was the still popular fjord flatware.  Over the years the company has expanded and now features over 2,000 products ranging from dinnerware, glassware, home decor and more.

Vintage lovers are always on the lookout for their brightly colored cast iron casseroles or teak and silver plated platters.  We are fortunate enough to have a silver plated coffee set, dating back Dansk’s beginnings in the 1950s.  Wouldn’t this make a unique wedding or shower gift?  Contact us or swing by our store to check this item out along with other one of kind items that would sure make your wedding gift one to remember!

Staying Neutral

Select Design Lessons: Staying Neutral

Design Lessons

Here at Select we love reading a good design blog. One of our favorites is Design*Sponge for it’s mix and match and down to earth approach to design and interiors. Recently in our perusing of DS we came across this lovely Mid-Century home in Salt Lake City. What we loved most was its neutral vibe with clean lines and simple color scheme.

Sometimes sticking to whites and tans can have just as much as an impact as a red wall or graphic pop.  We especially like grouping neutrals together, a group of white vases like the ones pictured above (which are all available for purchase at our store) stand out when placed together on a contrasting surface.  Whether you are looking to stay neutral or go bold we can help, contact us or swing by our store today to chat about design and check out our selection of home accents and decoratives!

Design Lessons

This week we take a look at Paul R. Evans, an American sculptor, artist, and furniture maker. Primarily working with metal Paul was at the forefront of the American craft movement during the 1970’s.  His furniture company, Directional Furniture, created a unique standard for custom made pieces.  Each piece was made and finished by hand and closely supervised by Paul himself.  Due to the intricate details of the work Paul’s pieces can range anywhere from $3,000 to over $30,000!  Lenny Kravitz is a fan as well artists and art lovers across the globe. Sadly, on the day of Paul’s retirement in 1987 he suffered a fatal heart attack but his contributions to both art and fine craftsmanship lives on.

We are lucky to have a Paul Evan’s style lamp in stock … the perfect item to add some dimension and funk to your living room.  We also have an additional assortment of unique lamps and lighting come and check us out, or inquire about any pieces in our shop by e-mailing us or messaging us on Facebook.

Budd Hopkins Abstract Art

Design Lessons

We love art, and we love art even more when there is a story attached to it. The story of Budd Hopkins is interesting to say the least. Born in West Virginia Budd contracted polio when he was young. While recovering Budd discovered drawing. This interest led him to Oberlin College where Budd majored in Art History.  He eventually moved to New York City where he became friends with other abstract impressionist artists at the time such as Mark Rothko and Franz Kline.  Budd’s work featured geometric shapes mostly working with collages. Budd considered collage “the assemblage of fragments and varying points of view, in the poetry, painting, sculpture, music, architecture, and especially, motion picture of his day.”

Later in life Budd’s interest shifted and this is where it gets interesting.  Budd is credited as a prominent leader in the UFO movement.  Budd had been interested in aliens and UFOS since he was a child.  As he grew older his interest grew. While teaching in Truro in 1964 he claimed to have witnessed a day time UFO sighting. He also claimed to see aliens disembark from a UFO and take soil samples in New Jersey.  He formed “The Intruders Foundation of Manhattan” and began to receive letters from abductees. He wrote three books in the subject of alien abduction and even had a television mini-series based off of his books. Budd claimed that believed that no good could come of being the unwilling subject of a vast human genome project in the sky. He called his informants “victims” and ran group therapy sessions for them in New York. Budd died in 2011 but his influence in both the art world and with alien abduction lives on.

We are fortunate enough to have two of Budd’s original works in our store including untitled abstract star, which is pictured above!
